A DAY AT THE MOVIES
Watching a good movie is one of my greatest pleasures. Not only do I enjoy a good story and strong characters, a movie takes me out of myself for a little while. I may feel what the characters are feeling, identify with this or that circumstance, but it is not my life and I can lay my burdens down for a while as I am engrossed in me film.
If you do not have a DVD player, it is a good investment. Prices have come way down now and you can get a nice one for under $100. If you want one that is compatible with HD-TV, it will cost more but it won't become obsolete as fast You can even shop on-line and have the DVD player shipped to your home. You must pay with a credit card for this. Sites such as bestbuy.com have a wide selection. If you buy a DVD player, ask a friend or family member to help you set it up. It is not as easy as it seems in the store. Once it is set up, though, you can control it with a simple remote.
There are a number of wonderful DVD rental services available on-line now, as well. I use Netflix.com. For about $10 a month I can make a list of movies and have them shipped to my door postage paid one at a time. I can watch the movie that day and put it in the return postage paid envelop in my mailbox right then. Or I can keep it as long as I want with no fees. When the movie is returned, Netflix ships me the next one on my list I understand that Blockbuster has a similar program. There are probably others as well.
In this section Eugenia, or members of the Encouraging Words team, will be recommending to you movies that we have enjoyed. Some will be old, some new and everywhere in between. You may have seen none of them or all of them but I think they will be worth another viewing. If you have a favorite movie that you would like me to include on our list, send me an e-mail and let me know.
Movies To Try
If you are in the mood for a sweet romance Shall We Dance, starring Richard Gere, Susan Sarandon and Jennifer Lopez is a wonderful choice. The story is of a middle aged man who feels something lacking in his life. On a chance he enrolls in a ballroom dancing class without telling his wife. It is a remake of the Japanese original that is also a delight

Shall We Dance
If you are in the mood for a good cry, Life as a HOUSE is guaranteed to produce tears. The incredible Kevin Kline stars in this story of a man's decision to rebuild his house. In so doing he rebuilds his life, relationships and shows us a little bit of what redemption is all about when it is lived out in and through the imperfections of human beings

If you are in the mood for inspiration, Chariots of Fire is perhaps my favorite movie of all time. With an extraordinary cast this movie chronicles the aspirations and fates of the British Olympic Team at the summer games of 1920. lan Charleson as the Scottish Missionary and Ben Cross as the tortured Jewish runner are outstanding. I saw this movie years ago when it came out. The theme song still brings me to tears of joy.

If you are in the mood for a movie that celebrates the sensuality of older women, Something's Gotta Give will have you throwing away your night cream and saying "you go girl" to Diane Keaton. This is the story of a well into middle aged playboy (Jack Nickolson) who has a heart attack and a resulting change of heart. There is a little language and some non-marital sex in this movie but it is worth it to see the beautiful Diane Keaton and to watch Jack Nickolson grow up.
